Edits Are Done, Proof is On the Way

Hello again friends!

It’s about time I update you on what’s going on with my book, yeah?

Like the title of this post says, the edits are all finished up and the very first proof copy of my book has been ordered.  It’s a little hard to believe I’ve gotten this far, and it probably won’t seem real until I have that copy in my hands.

Editing was quite a process.  That’s not to say it was hard – it’s just long and tedidious.  It’s safe to say that I will take ‘Editor’ off my list of possible future careers (despite the fact that I did the second round of editing for my book).  What I found helped me with editing was reading the book aloud, which made it easier to catch mistakes and phrases that didn’t sound right.  I had a fun time with the final read-through and even tried out different voices for my characters.

Once my book was all edited, I got it formatted up to the template that I got off of CreateSpace and uploaded it (a few times) to make sure it would look right for submission and ordering the first copy.  Now all I’ll have to do is format the book for Kindle, approve of the print book, then publish my baby!

This is where it gets real exciting.

Is it Wednesday yet?

Cover Reveal!

It didn’t take long to choose a cover, thanks to the voting that took place last week.  So, drumroll please…

Oh, wait, this is a blog.

Just imagine one, then, because here is the cover for Standing By!

I only tweaked the cover slightly once I knew this would be the one (bonus points if you can notice the tiny difference).

Some people who I talked to didn’t like the white cover because of the way it blends in with backgrounds on the internet, like this blog.  However, I personally love white covers and find them to catch my eye more so than any other covers on the shelves.  I also like that this cover is simple, which is another factor I like in book covers when I’m book shopping.

Meanwhile, if all goes well over the next week or so, the book should be available no later than the end of July.  Latest would be mid-August.  But for my sanity, let’s shoot for mid-to-end of July, shall we?

Book Design Time!

Now that my book is in the hands of a few select editors, I am going to focus on the most important part of the book… the cover!

I mean, we all judge books by their covers, right?

I figure a good way to distract myself from thinking about other eyes constructively criticizing my baby is to keep my focus on what I’d like for a book cover.  I’ve had some ideas over the months of writing, but now that the writing is actually done, I can get a better picture in my head.  The great, but also terrible, thing about this is that there are numerous ways I can go with the cover.  Being an indecisive person most of the time… well, this doesn’t help me at all.

A few cover mock-ups have been made, and by a few, I mean two.  There are other ideas that I want to play with first before I start making decisions.

In the meantime, I’m just having fun designing the possible covers.

Off to the Editors We Go!

This weekend Standing By will get into the hands of a few select editors.  Mind you, since I’m going along the self-publishing route, I’m not using professional editors.  Instead, I’m using the connections that I do have – English majors and librarians.  I’m a little apprehensive to let new eyes see my book, but I’m sure that’s how all writers feel.  Even the vets.

I can’t say how long this part will take.  Again, this is my first rodeo along the lines of actually going through with getting something published.  I suppose this depends on how fast my first set of editors read and how many mistakes or problems they catch (though I hope it’s not many.  I did just go through a brief self-editing period to spruce it up).

To keep myself busy while other eyes are looking over my work, I’ll take some time to properly work on a cover and get myself familiar with the self-publishing process (more so than I have).

I’m getting real excited about this!
